Hello. My name is Atiya Duncan, and today I will be talking about my digital portfolio. This site’s purpose is to function as a curated archive for both academic and personal work that I have created during my undergrad at Agnes Scott College.
Over the course of putting together this site, I have been able to deepen my understanding of how WordPress works generally and stretch it to its fullest potential with the resources I had available. In the past, I had brief experiences using WordPress to put together basic sites with pages, text, and images. Building this site allowed me to learn more about how to put together appropriate categories for the information I was adding, as well as reverse engineering page structures from other sites that I wanted to emulate.
This digital portfolio has also given me a bird’s eye view of my work, my recurring interests, and how they relate to one another. Additionally, this was also reflected in my design choices for this website.
Starting with the front page, It features my header with the page navigation on the right and the home page button on the left. The main page contains my name and description overlaid on a cover image of one of my works. Underneath that is a short sentence that leads to the “About” page. The footer includes my LinkedIn, email, and the copyright for the site. The structure of this page was inspired by the website of a concept artist whose landing page included a similar structure; her work is used in the background with an overview and a header at the top of the page.
The first page of my website is the “Projects” page, which includes the academic and personal work that I have curated. Each work is placed under an appropriate category and organized in reverse chronological order. When you click on the red text, it leads you to a short post telling you the date, the categories, a brief overview of each piece and my creative process. This page was also inspired by a comic artist’s “Publications” page, which showed all of their works organized in the same structure.
The “Folio” is a category page showing all the works within that category, and is reserved for art pieces and crafts. The “Blog” page is for any writings about specific experiences or research I have completed. Each one is categorized under “Writings.” Finally, there is the “About” page, which has a digital collage image, an extended personal statement, and my contact information again.
Overall, I wanted to build a site that reflected what I was currently interested in; flowers were a big one, as well as the red and browns for the color scheme and the paper texture for the site background. I also struggled a lot with making the “Projects” page look the way I wanted, and I almost gave up, so I’m happy that I pushed through and created something that I am proud of. Thank you.
